Too much of a good thing is Wonderful!

Mae West said it and boy was she so right, too much of a good thing is wonderful. In this case lots of Arts and Culture to entice the creative side in all of us. Here is a pretty good list of what is happening culturally in Southern Nevada as we march towards April and First Friday festivities at the end of this week. I have combined Laraine Kaiser's weekly musical roundup and a slew of art receptions and events so that you can get the full gamut. As more information comes in I will post accordingly. You can also check out KNPR's website for a more concise list of community happenings.

Also stay tuned for my rant regarding New York Art critic Julia Halperin's attack on Las Vegas Cultural Art Scene coming tonight.

And they say there is no Art and Culture in Las Vegas? Stay informed and stay enculturated!

New York Art Snob gives Vegas the Snub...

It was just over a week ago that Kristen Petersen at the Las Vegas Weekly reported about New York City art critic Julia Halperin's scathing article in ArtInfo, claiming that "Whatever art is left in Vegas won't be there for long." It is obvious that this journalist did not do her due diligence and research her topic before she came to Las Vegas and attack this communities art scene. Halperin's article 5 Indications That Las Vegas's Glitzy Art Gamble Has Gone Bust is a hastily written assessment on a fraction of Las Vegas ever expanding arts community. My question is did Halperin really come to Las Vegas on vacation or was she sent here on assignment? Basically she came to Vegas looking for trash and trash is what she wrote.

Ms. Halperin's assessment of our community's art scene is stereotypical of east coast elitism especially by reporters with ulterior motives. Another example I remember all too clearly was when Alan Elsner, a reporter from Reuters, came to Las Vegas in 2001 looking for dirt about the Liberace Museum. Not just did he misquote me but he basically alluded that the museum was still keeping Liberace in the closet, which of course was farthest from the truth. I was the museums collections manager at the time and remember clearly Elsner's own comments about how much he despised Las Vegas.

For over a century Las Vegas has grown against all odds, in an arid climate, with little water and little chance at success. But time and time again this radiant city has proven it has come back stronger and better. Kick us while we are down and we will spring right back up. We have been doing it that way for 106 years and nothing will stop us. Maybe Las Vegas does not fit Julia's or Alan's standards of arts and culture but its not supposed to. Las Vegas is its own city with its own customs and mores. Las Vegas was built on the idea, as so eloquently put by Frank Sinatra, "We did it our Way."

The Literati descend upon the Contemporary Arts Center... TONIGHT!

Under the leadership of Princess Anne Mulford and her team the Contemporary Arts Center (CAC) continues to push the gauntlet as the last surviving non-profit Contemporary art gallery in Las Vegas. With a good slate of thought provoking shows and events the CAC has become the beacon for many artists and patrons alike who study and enjoy new genres of art. Of course I am completely biased due to the fact that I sat on the board of the CAC for 8 years and I make no qualms that I am a major fan of the organization. The CAC has survived when other much better funded Contemporary art spaces have come and gone, ahem NICA (Nevada Institute for Contemporary Art), LVAM (Las Vegas Art Museum)... But I digress.

As a survivor, the CAC continues to amaze the masses with a slate of events that keep the organization fresh and make Las Vegas' art scene ever more interesting.

This evening the CAC will host Neon Lit a collection of poets, writers and special guests that will entertain and amaze with the written word. The doors will open at 6 pm so that everyone can enjoy the organizations latest exhibition It's a Blur with readings beginning at 7pm.

University Students Converge in Carson City...

It is so heart warming to see students rise up against draconian cuts that they understand will decimate the university system in Nevada for at least a generation. At a time when we should be investing in our educational infrastructure to help rebuild our economy into something more than what it is today, Governor Brian Sandoval stands firm against investing in Nevada's future. He marches lock-step with his party and refuses to do what is right. What seems more important to Governor Sandoval is his party rather then Nevada and I even suspect his political aspirations beyond Carson City.

There was a time when elected leaders worked together for the good of the state, but sadly partisan politics and twisted ideologies have decimated what was once a collegial relationship. We elected leaders not because of there party affiliation but rather by their ability to lead. It is sad that today this is no longer the case. What our future holds is anyones guess but if we keep electing leaders like this, then we are as much to blame. Everyone knows that the only way we can grow as a society is by investing in our future and if you look at the rest of the world, they are doing a pretty good job beating us at our own game.

I have published both letters that were presented to the Governor and the State Legislature by the students of Nevada this week.

Letter to Governor Brian Sandoval

March 21, 2011

Dear Governor Sandoval:

As a Nevada student, I am the future of our state, and I know that a good education is the cornerstone of opportunity for my family, friends, community and me.

Your proposed cuts to my school will stop us from building the kind of state we want and limit my chances of success. Your proposals will cut down the future of my peers and extinguish our hopes and dream in very real ways: How do you expect me to learn in a classroom of 45 students? How do you expect me to get into college without any sports or extracurricular programs? How do you expect me to work a second job to pay tuition? And how exactly do you expect me to earn my degree if my classes are full or not even offered?

You promised during your campaign not to raise taxes. But the budget situation has gotten worse and we need a broader solution. Cuts alone, as you have proposed, will cripple Nevada for a generation. It’s shortsighted and it’s not leadership.

In this time of crisis, we are looking to you and legislators to guide us to a better future. We are watching to see if you will lead us forward. We’re looking for you to bring Democrats and Republicans together to find that balanced solution. If we need cuts, then balance them with new revenue so my school isn’t devastated.

You are the leader of our state. I call on you to set politics aside and do what’s right for my future, my community’s future, and Nevada’s future.

Sincerely,
Student representatives from across Nevada

Letter to the State Legislature

Dear Legislator,

We are in Carson City today to ask you to work for a balanced solution to Nevada’s budget crisis. We realize that there will need to be cuts in state government, but we also know that business and industry must pay their fair share if we want the kind of education system that will allows us to succeed and build a strong state.

In many ways, we are here as representatives of the future. We are the next generation of Nevada leaders, and we need you to give us the tools and opportunity to succeed. High school classrooms of forty students won’t lead to success. College programs being eliminated won’t lead to success. Teachers being laid off by the thousands won’t lead to success. Limiting access to higher education won’t lead to success.

The cuts the governor has proposed won’t lead to a bright future. We are looking to you to put Nevada on a better path. We are counting on you, and years from now, when you look back at this time and see Nevada thriving, you will be proud to say that you had the foresight and wisdom to be part of the solution.

As a token and reminder of our visit, we are presenting you with this poster. We hope you will hang it in your office as a reminder of our message today.

Sincerely,
Student representatives from across Nevada

Rock Star Artist Aaron Shepard to speak at CENTERpiece Gallery...

If there was one word to describe Las Vegas artist Aaron Shepard it could be; Fabulous, Awesome, Cool, Nice, Twisted, Mad, Crazy, Decadent and I could go on an on. My experience with artists in general has either been hot or cold but with Aaron it has been hot hot hot, not to mention he is a damn nice guy. So a few weeks ago when I mused with his newest collection at CENTERpiece gallery, I was blown out of the water yet again by his thought processes and his creative mind. Besides I don't think there is any artist on the planet that could put me in heals like Aaron has. But I digress...

So on Wednesday March 16, CENTERpiece Gallery and MCQ Fine Art Advisory presents a special evening with The Rock Star of the local Contemporary Art Scene, the one and only Aaron Sheppard. This one is not to be missed!

Wednesday, March 16, 2011
6:00pm-8:00pm
CENTERpiece Gallery is located along the lower level of Crystals Place, situated inside Mandarin Oriental, Las Vegas porte-cochere.
Event is free of charge and open to the public.
Gallery Director Nicole Moffatt

Sheppard’s current exhibition at CENTERpiece Gallery will run through April 10, 2011, during normal business hours, 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. daily.

After 22 years the Contemporary Arts Center keeps moving forward by bringing great and thought provoking art to Las Vegas. This time they have teamed up with the Barrick Museum at UNLV and SOMArts Cultural Center in San Francisco to present a new exhibition. Its good to know that this survivor of the Contemporary Art world is still going when so many others have disappeared. Makes you want to be a part of it doesn't it?
